Deze omvangrijke uitgave biedt een overzicht van de belangrijkste teksten over architectuur uit de twintigste eeuw - voor het eerst in één standaardwerk toegankelijk voor de Nederlandstalige lezer. Opgenomen zijn invloedrijke manifesten en programmatische geschriften die een pleidooi houden voor een specifieke architectuuropvatting, maar ook theoretische teksten die in meer algemene zin de rol en betekenis van architectuur in de samenleving tot onderwerp hebben. Tot de geselecteerde auteurs behoren niet alleen beroemde architecten als Sullivan, Loos, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Rossi, Tschumi, Eisenman en Koolhaas, maar ook minder bekende grootheden als Mauclair en Mordvinov. Er is daarnaast ook plaats ingeruimd voor dichters als Marinetti en Valéry, voor kunstenaars als Lissitzky en Malevitch, en voor theoretici als Rykwert, Mumford, Banham en Tafuri. Ook de filosofen zijn prominent aanwezig: Adorno, Benjamin, Bataille en Heidegger. De keuze van deze meer dan honderdvijftig teksten is gebaseerd op hun intrinsieke kwaliteit, hun historisch belang en hun relevantie voor het hedendaagse architectuurdebat. De teksten, waarvan het overgrote deel voor het eerst in een Nederlandse vertaling, zijn chronologisch geordend en elk voorzien van een korte situerende inleiding. Een uitgebreid apparaat met thematische commentaarteksten en een geïntegreerd register maken dit naslagwerk compleet. Teksten die in de twintigste eeuw van invloed zijn geweest op de ontwikkelingen in de architectuur. In een inleiding lichten de samenstellers (afkomstig van de Universiteit van Leuven) hun uitgangspunten toe. Ze verklaren waarom de nadruk ligt op filosofische teksten, teksten over wonen en stedenbouw en teksten over het modernisme en de avant-garde. Daarna volgen, in chronologische volgorde, 155 teksten uit de periode 1896-1997, de meeste nooit eerder in het Nederlands vertaald. Alle teksten zijn voorzien van een korte inleiding waarin de achtergrond van de tekst en de auteur wordt geschetst en een literatuuropgave. Het boek wordt afgesloten met een 'kritisch apparaat' van 200 pagina's waarin verbanden worden gelegd tussen verschillende teksten. De teksten die zijn opgenomen zijn niet alleen geschreven door architecten maar ook door kunstenaars, theoretici en filosofen. Niet gemakkelijk, wel heel bijzonder dat nu een aantal klassieke teksten uit de architectuurgeschiedenis bij elkaar staan en in het Nederlands te lezen zijn. Bevat geen illustraties.

In 1977, the Benedictine monk and architect Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) published his manifesto Architectonic Space, Fifteen Lessons on the Disposition of the Human Habitat . Seeking out to capture the essence of spatial experience as a foundation for architecture, he developed a design methodology through his own proportional system of the 'Plastic Number'. Around that same period, Dom van der Laan built Roosenberg Abbey in Waasmunster for the Marian Sisters of St.-Francis. And while his theories remain fairly abstract, this building demonstrates the concrete use of proportion, materiality and light in relation to perception and movement in space. Moreover, this building is designed to guide the inhabitant into contemplation, intensity and stillness. This manual is an introduction to Dom van der Laan's design methodology, as he applied it to Roosenberg Abbey. Original drawings are combined with explanatory diagrams, complemented by nine original letters from the architect to the Sisters as well as a series of photographs by Friederike von Rauch, to offer an in-depth reading of this building on different levels.
